Clown first seen in Italian Opera (Paggliaci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, 1892). The Clown was a character that can only Express love by killing someone. He's inflicted with hopeless sorrow but all he can do is smile, that's why many clowns draw a large tear on their faces while singing :
