Would make no sense to have something happen to Lee immediately after Gai. Plus Neji had some sort of an actual relationship with Naruto and Naruto actually made him a better person, unlike Lee who's just a friend.

The death was supposed to impact Naruto in a personal way and the only two candidates were Neji and Shikamaru. Shikamaru was a way better character so I'm glad they didn't kill him.

they are good friends just like shikamaru. kishimoto could have killed them instead
