Genre: Magical girl, thriller, psychological, drama, and a few more apparently :/
so we are thrown into a messed up dream of this girl (Madoka Kaname), where she sees a mysterious chick desperately fighting against some unknown enemy, in what looks like a post apocalyptic city, and does not seem to be getting the upper hand...cue the cute little cat creature (kyubey). This little guy promises to grant a girl any wish she desires, provided she becomes a magical girl and helps in a secret fight against witches to protect humanity......
Okay so this show has got cute girls, all having their own different color costume, all with magic, all have a cute little cut scene to get into gear, and it has cute and colorful animation to boot......DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ANY OF THIS!!! This is no "winx club" or "witch" or any other pixy girl team rip off (i swear i only know those names because of my sister -_-). For starters they aint gonna blow away the enemies with some earth wind fire water heart dark light captain planet combo. Oh no, these girls fight with swords, guns, spears, pretty much the things you do not want pointed at you. So yes, the action is awesome ^_^. The thing that puts this apart from the rest of those types is its surprisingly untypical story for a magical girl show (you know the whole...evil ultimate bad guy who was locked away suddenly comes out, everyone after some power, bad guy gets it and becomes unstoppable and the good guys win anyway...type thing). i dont wana really say much about the story but i will say it is dark, perplexing, and can leave you questioning your own morals even sometimes...that said do not watch this show if you had a bad day and you are looking for something to make you feel happy XD. Also the villain in the story is an intriguing one, and is unlike any other in his reasoning for his actions. Then there is the art style...I have never seen it before in my life O_O its very original, and kinda seems a little out of place at times, but as i said do not let that fool you. The characters though are somewhat typical, there is your overly caring main character, a mysterious chick, a tomboyish best friend...yeah. but there is one character that i really liked though called Kyoko Sakura (she is nothing like sakura incase your wondering -_-), i do not know if its just coz of a thing i seem to have for characters that eat whenever they want but yeah XD also the mysterious girl is quite interesting to learn about so that is a plus. In the short time span it has (12 episodes) it manages to put in quite a bit, and the story completes quite nicely.
Okay ill try the score even though i dont really know how they work XD
Story: 8,5 / 10 (has nice twists)
Animation: 7,5 - 8 / 10 (points for its originality)
Characters: 7/10
sound track: 10/10 (it is frackin amazing....and i forgot to add it first T.T i feel ashamed...)
Overall I enjoyed it so ill say 8,5 to 9 / 10
Here is an awesome AMV to get a taste of the battle and art style courtesy of burnsy ^_^: No need to watch the entire AMV coz it might spoil a little but its quite long so you got time to stop. I watched it before I watched the show and did that.
