I am not sure if this is completely a legal thing to ask to users! Ad Campaigns Websites Webmasters usually ban those who try to ask for clicks in their banners.
I think it would be better if you put a PayPal donation button in the header section so people can freely send donations to your online bank account!

we did have one of those.

It's legal, and this is coming from someone who studied criminal law for a year in college before switching to something else. As for the paypal, we did try that and it failed. It's completely legal to ask users to white-list their site. Example, Hulu does it.
 
Well, as no one is being interested in donating anything, we have removed that plugin as it increases our page loading time a bit.
