Cheap Deus Ex Machina where the hero saves someone from death at the very, very, very last second. *cough*FMAB*cough* Come on, there are more creative ways to prevent a character from being killed. Bad weather, environmental factor, honor code, etc.

Also, cheap power ups that occur when it's convenient. Reason why I stay away from most shounen anime.
