Why do people don't recommend the main stream anime like naruto, one piece, bleach or some other shonen anime, for people who want to try out anime? Is it because of the length? I don't really get it to be honest...

It is because of the length. You don't want to scare people off.
Plus they don't really hold up that well to be honest.

they are very long and people don't think of watching them and sending that much time, when they are very new. if someone asks me to watch a very long anime, which i don't know much, i won't watch it
