Is it difficult to distinguish popular within anime fandom in Japan and mainstream anime in Japan?

What do you guys think about it?
 
i don't know what you mean lol
or do you mean something about mainstream anime and other anime with immense popularity?
 
Well, I suppose it can be confusing.
I am talking about something like AOT and One piece in Japan. I am sure it's clear now.

I think all anime seems the same in Japan, I've seen some people traveling and they just have anime plastered everywhere.

You gotta take the “everywhere” part with a grain of salt. Some of that is really just parts of Tokyo like Akihabara.
 
Even in Japan, there are people who are not into anime and manga.
You just can't distinguish them and labels don't mean much
