Is being a good guy mandatory for main protagonist character?

I don't think so.
Light is not a good protagonist by any means and he is The main protagonist of death note

Ah yes.. to be honest it makes the series more interesting to me

No but at worst the main character can be an anti-hero. Somebody who's just pure evil wouldn't work in my opinion, there should be something that sort of connects us to him. Anime like Death Note, Code Geass, Black Lagoon, Zankyou no Terror don't have good guy protagonist but at least their motivations make sense albeit in a twisted way.

How do you feel about them compared to regular main protagonist? Do you find them more interesting? or maybe more disgusting? Or...?

It's refreshing but I prefer good guy protagonists. More often than not in anime these anti-heroes are a bunch of edge-lords living their revenge fantasies.

Oh well true, they are refreshing, see something different once in a while is a good thing
