You know.. something like DBZ, Naruto, Bleach
My very first exposure to anime was in late 80's, and it was mecha lol super robot genre like Golion, Voltes, Godsigma, Getter Robo, Mazinger
At that time tokutsatsu like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, Metal Heroes was more popular than anime. Oh yea.. American cartoon like He-Man, Ninja Turtles, GI Joe, Centurion, Silver Hawks, M.A.S.K, Galaxy Rangers, Transformer G1 was also a big hit
In early 90's we got our first private TV Station, they aired anime instead of cartoon. I still remember they were aired Doraemon, Candy Candy, Sanjushi, Igano Kabamaru, Mr. Ajikko, Dash Yonkuro and.. Saint Seiya!! Yes.. my first typical battle shonen is Saint Saiya not Dragon Ball lol
Mid and late 90's we got more private TV Stations, and yes that means we got more animes like Macross, Kickers, Ikyuu-San, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, DBZ, Karasu Tengu Kabuto, Shulato, Tetsuwan Atom, Yaiba, Ronin Warrior, Jigoku Sensei Nube and many more

In 2000's anime gained massive popularity. TV Station aired series like Rurouni Kenshin, Detective Conan, Captain Tsubasa, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, Kekkaishi, Hikaru No Go. People also start importing and selling anime which didnt aired in TV. That time the was real, anime established their reputation as new hobby for a lot of people
So yeah.. my anime journey was started from super robot genre lol how about you?
