You take 10 shows in the same genre, you’ll see that the most popular one would be the one that had the biggest marketing budget. It’s got a bigger studio making it, and the manga was in a more popular magazine.
With the timing, some of it has to be showing up at the right place and time. Also a lot of the more popular shows tend to be one of the earlier ones to come out. Being one of the first ones on the block will have you stick out from the rest of the pack, and a big lead, as opposed to coming out a few years when the genre is popular, and you’re not doing anything to stick out.
