Do you believe advertising immensely can make an anime popular?

I don't see any anime being considered very bad and having less than average score after getting advertised immensely. Do you think advertising is everything for an anime?

Advertising is one of the biggest keys to popularity. People have to know your product exists.

People like thinking that the quality is enough to make something popular, but why else do cult classics and hidden gems exist?

really good anime still needs advertising and word of mouth is not enough
