Difference Between Anime and Manga

So, it's no secret that I have no idea about either of these two things. I'd like to know exactly what they are and what differences there are between them. By no means am I trying to down talk or trash talk either, I'm just not that into it as a lot of other people but I think a lot of that has to do with understanding it and understanding the appeal. So if someone could break it down for me I'd be grateful. What I can tell you is I've seen the following anime/manga type shows and I've loved them. Dragon Ball (entire series, sub-series, etc) and Pokemon. But I don't even know what they are considered.

Internationally, anime is basically anything animated from Japan. In Japan however it's anything that's animated. It's basically cartoon but people get pissed when you call it that because a lot of the popular anime are violent, dark and sexual.
Manga is nothing but comics in Black and White, and you need to read every page right to left, instead of left to right because that's how they read it in Japan.

Oh well, Anime usually skips parts covered in manga and gives a less detailed potrayal. That's one of the differences I wish , didn't exist ..

It goes a bit deeper than the two. There is also things called Light Novels or LN which can act as a source material, LNs are mostly like manga but more text than pics. Most of the time an anime is based off of either a manga or LN, sometimes they will create an anime only series and in time get a manga or LN since people do like reading better.

Only thing to keep in mind is that not everything is the same between the different medias based on the same series.
