Tsubaki, midfielder of East Tokyo United is the 'second' main protagonist of Giant Killing since the 'true' main protagonist Takeshi Tatsumi is main coach of the team, so Tsubaki is needed by the series to become 'hero' on the field.
This Tsubaki guy is unlike the typical Tsubasa who excellent at everything, his forte is only speed, acceleration and positioning, so in this series other player will also get a spotlight and moment of glory, this is refreshing for football theme manga/anime which is usually too focus on the main protagonist.
Talk about his character, Tsubaki is kinda bland, like most of football theme manga/anime that give most portion of their duration to the sport aspect (unlike shoot which is also focus on the drama aspect), only few typical athlete traits that can be noticed from him like never give up, trying to do the best, and well.. something like that.
So i think.. to give color to Tsubaki the author give him personal struggle with his lack-confident and self-doubt which is actually okay. But unfortunately the author use this 'personal struggle' too much, or on the other words it's use again and again to the point of boring. Yes it's kinda annoying, i feel like..'just enough already, get a grip of yourself' i'm not exaggerating thing here, his lack of confident happened again and again, even Ikari Shinji get better in the midway of Evangelion series, but i think.. this problem is not his fault, it's the author who make him like that haha..
But then again this flaw is not damaging the entire series as this series is pretty balanced in portion. As i mentioned before.. Tsubaki is not always the main show here, other player also get some attention. So i think as a character he is just so-so at his best.
