Chrono Crusade

Okay. I seriously want to talk about the differences between the Manga and the Anime of Chrono Crusade. I know the Anime received some hate from the fans of the Manga. I will rant about many archs, characters and changes so I don't recommend you to read this thread if you're interested in this anime/manga until you're done watching/reading the formats you care about.

I cannot blame the Anime for diverting too much from the Manga during the second half. The Manga was still in production when the Anime started and they were both scheduled to finish around the same time, this means that at some point there wouldn't be any manga to adapt. All things given, I can see Gonzo (the studio that animated it) did try to hastily incorporate whatever they could someone what fit in their diverted version, at least like a winks for the readers. For example  Satella and her sister's destiny end in basically the same way. The picture had a purpose on the Anime and that moment where Chrno loses all hope is there, albeit downplayed as they weren't able to recreate the circumstances of the manga in the middle of their rapture.

The main problem I have with the Anime is Rosette's role. I feel the Anime goes against what the Manga tried to do. Rosette is not "the special one". there are demons, Angels, apostles all around her but she's just a normal human being. Out of her contract with Chrno  she doesn't gain any special powers, in fact, she is giving away her soul to allow Chrno to use his powers. Rosette has inner strength. She can be loud and stubborn but she is also loyal and caring. Knowing that she will probably die early in life doesn't make her fall in despair but actually trying to make her days count. She doesn't believe in taking destiny as it comes and instead will fight for what she wants.

A big proof of Rosette not being the passive damsel in distress can be seen through her interactions with Chrno. She is not intimidated by him and a lot of the humour comes from her being Harsh on the good natured demon. When you see them interacting you can see that they have that trust only gained through years of a close bond. They are very close friends. They might bicker at times but they end up laughing together and showing genuine care for each other.

The Anime through its second arch steps on these two things by Making her have stigmata, healing powers and having her joining with Aion. She even reproach Chrno for the time she willingly gave away before, knowing as a close friend how much Chrno already beats himself off every single time he is forced to use her soul. This just felt out of character - especially considering how many struggles and time they shared together and how Rosette had grown to hate Aion for what he had done to Joshua - but at least it is short, redeemed and a bit justified.

Another thing I didn't like in the anime was to take the approach to make the characters back and white. In the manga, when Az is captured and when we can see some memories from Chrno we can learn more about each sinner and see a gray zone where they have a warm genuine relationships and most of them just want to be free to live their lives. Viede is a foil to Genai. Viede is calm, rational and doesn't really start fights unless instructed to. In the Anime he was treated as a disposable target and thus was hastily throw around as a ferocious Villain to be destroyed by the good guys.

Aion disregards human lives but I don't recall in the manga his constant harassment towards Rosette in order to get to Chrno nor the amplification of his lust as we see him with several girls. I felt this addition unnecessary.

Satella boobs growth for the anime didn't annoy me as much as it seem to have bothered other people.

Another interesting difference is that in the Manga Father Remington has Legion (demon cells) in his body while the anime reveals him as a Angel. I am not sure if I think this is better or worse. i thought it was still a wink to the manga reveal by inverting the situation.  I kind of felt bad that Father Remington was downplayed to bring more badassery to Rosette.

the first 18 episodes are still close enough to the manga.

If you exclude the epilogue, I think the ending dared to do something risky and as a result it marked the people who viewed it. Till today, the clip of that afternoon gets a hold of my heart when I watch it. It is beautiful and heart breaking.

Even with all I have ranted, and while I still think the anime version is inferior to the Manga - subjective - but I don't think it is trash. The anime does have some redeeming things to it. Even things that I didn't agree with like Aion change could be justified in Gonzo's attempt to represent better the religious aspects. As a Demon it makes sense to polarise his behaviour according to Christian beliefs, so I guess being lustful makes sense in this context.

I think they handled better the religion adding more catholic elements and lore. The filler episodes were enjoyable for the most part.

Anyway, any of you have since both and what to comment on this?

I can't but to agree with all your points, my dear friend. I too, feel the manga is way better than the Anime for the same reasons as yours.

That's a good review you got there
I don't think I can think of a single thing for argument sake.

I’ve watched a few episodes and have dropped it, as it’s too long and lagging for my short attention span myself. I love short episodic Shojo anime best.
