I don't see why it shouldn't be. Anime is a style of animated TV and film now. Yes it started as a Japan specific description for their style of animation but now you have studios making anime style shows in other languages than just japanese and I'm not talking about dubbing but original language anime for their country.

I think they should just make a new term for it. It’s turning into terms like indie where things with the indie “aesthetic” but is produced by major companies, so it kind of lost the meaning.

You do need to realize that saying stuff about your feelings or opinion doesn’t magically give people a free pass to say whatever they want. Being racist is based on feelings and opinions, but that doesn’t stop them from being a terrible person.
