Most games with cheat codes these days, also don't tend to have very good cheat codes. I think a big part of cheat codes in earlier generations of video games, was that game developers knew they could make money by selling game guides that contained cheat codes to people. These days, everyone can access all of the cheat codes online for free, as all it takes is one person to buy a guide, and then upload all the codes online. So I think game developers stopped because of that. Along with the fact that a lot of cheat codes just tend to ruin most games. There are exceptions of course, i.e. Grand Theft Auto, and The Sims - I'd hate to play those games without cheat codes.
