Appeal to Westerners

While I definitely do not dislike anime, I do wonder why anime has such an appeal to Westerners. Do you think that anime producers intentionally tried to make anime appeal to Westerners, or did it just happen naturally?

Appeal for westerners in the sense, they like anime more than comics?
I believe so.
Anime isn't limited for just one age group.

I think it really comes down to how it comes off to each person. I never thought I would have even watched Pokemon or YGO, but I ended up liking them. As for DBZ and One Piece, those always came off as something I would never want to watch and it was how it looked and that was the basic reason on how people can take a liking to anime.
