I think it's BS too. You have to watch multiple anime to get a feel for the genre. There's weird shows in every type of media, anime isn't the exception lol.
That's like picking up a book and saying you're anti-book because you tried to read Gone With the Wind or something because it was raved about 50 years ago. As @Ravenfreak mentioned, you gotta find the genre you vibe with.
I mean, I love weird stuff. I was introduced to anime this way. Watching Ranma 1/2, was my first exposure to the Gender-Bender genre. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha was my first official Magical Girl show, despite enjoying Tenchi Muyo (could be classified as pseudo-magical girl) and Ah! My Goddess, magical girl adjacent. But yet, I've bounced off of popular anime for various reasons.
