Sailor Moon redefined Magical Girl and made the genre popular.
Then Puella Magi Madoka Magica comes along and dumps Magical Girl on it's head and reinvigorates the genre as a deconstruction.
 
High school anime made the ero genre popular even though it's a horror anime of sorts.

I agree. Madoka made everyone gasp and stare at it in wonder.
 
There's no doubt that Sailor Moon made the magical girl genre popular. Transformers definitely made the Mecha genre popular in the states.
