Does flashback/backstory ruin the pacing of Anime?

No. Isn't that sometimes essential for the storyline? We need to watch some things in the past to get better understanding of the story
 
Sometimes it does man.
Imagine watching a very interesting and thrilling fight or moment only to see the past story, without it getting completed.
 
Sometimes, like for anime too close to the manga, they use it as a crutch and ruin the whole thing.
 
I enjoy seeing the flashbacks presented in a story. They help to answer the why questions, and help to gain a better understanding of a character or situation.
