Unpopular anime having popular characters?

I saw this back in the day, but not so much anymore.
What is the definition of an unpopular anime? Because I typically don't watch the mainstream / pushed-in-your-face anime that the big streamers promote. I like finding the obscure titles -- titles that are recommended by other fans, and for me, those titles become popular, but to me. But then again, I'm just weird.

i used to think main stream anime are bad and overrated.
then someone told me that, many people like them for a reason and you need to watch them before judging them. now i like naruto, one piece, bleach and fairy tail a lot.
